Chandigarh 17th August:-The Symposium is the fourth in the series of such academic meetings organized by Prof. G D Puri and Prof. Joseph Mathew. This year's Symposium was organized to strengthen the platform for collaboration between medical scientists, technology experts and industry colleagues- under the DST umbrella of promoting innovative solutions for health-care needs.

Modern health care is highly technology dependent and therefore cost intensive. In fact, many people in India are impoverished every year by the high cost of health-care related to investigations, diagnostic tests and treatment. There is an urgent need to develop indigenous health technologies to make health-care affordable and accessible to the common man. India is blessed with many intelligent minds working to create innovative devices and instruments. Government of India is amply supporting these efforts through funding support, creation of research facilities and excellent initiatives such as "make in India" campaign. However, despite this, many innovative technologies fail to reach the users. This is often because they are not subjected to extensive clinical testing and regulatory approvals.

In this regard, PGIMER Chandigarh has taken the initiative to encourage innovation and carry the innovative ideas through the stages of design, development and testing (in the lab as well as hospital). Dr. Puri and Dr. Mathew have been working with a team of scientists from various institutions to create a Biomedical Instruments and Devices Hub in Chandigarh. There is active participation from PGIMER, CSIO, IIT Ropar, IISER Mohali, Panjab University, UIET, IIT Mandi, INST Mohali, SCL Mohali and several other institutions in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. Prof. D. Behera, Dean (Research) emphasized the leading role played by PGIMER in research and development; and the importance of creating solutions for the problems faced by the common man. Prof. A. Rajwanshi, Sub Dean (Academic) of PGIMER suggested that these efforts could be expanded further by encouraging young minds in various disciplines to think of the problems faced by people every day; and work towards solving them.

The highlight of the Symposium was a special session on Biomedical Innovations wherein national experts shared their experience and expertise. The session was chaired by Prof. M. M. Nayak, a renowned expert in nano-technology based at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He led the deliberations on the current status of Indian innovations and the way forward. Dr. V. Sudhakar, from Defence Research and Development Organization's Aeronautical Development Agency (at Bangalore) highlighted the efforts of the National Programme on Smart materials (NPMASS) and its biomedical applications. The Programme exploits the country's vast expertise in nano-technology to create medically useful products. Mr. Mohammed Ameel, from the Health Ministry's National Health Systems Resource Centre at New Delhi spoke about the country's thrust towards streamlining the procurement of medical instruments and devices; and steps towards Health Technology Assessment. This is a growing global discipline and India is on track at par with the world. Prof. N S Dinesh, from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; highlighted the challenges in developing viable healthcare products fit for clinical use. Prof. N. S. Dinesh (I.I.Sc) stressed the importance of meticulous clinical and laboratory research as well as the numerous challenges faced in developing innovative products. Dr. Shyama Nagarajan heads an NGO called Saha Manthran, working to deliver health-care technologies to the unreached population in India. Chandigarh 17th August:-Johnson & Johnson Private Limited today announced a new partnership with the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), to unlock the potential of Indian science and help accelerate the discovery of innovative new treatments for tuberculosis (TB).

Under the Memorandum of Understanding, scientists from Johnson & Johnson's global public health team will work closely with scientists from CSIR-IMTECH, based in Chandigarh, India, on a research and development program to explore potentially more effective, safer, all-oral treatment regimens to tackle multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), as well as new molecular entities to treat all TB patients.

We are united with India in our determination to make TB history," said Paul Stoffels, M.D., Chief Scientific Officer, Johnson & Johnson, who joined Dr Harsh Vardhan, Minister for Science and Technology, at an event in New Delhi, to announce the Memorandum of Understanding. "While we have made great advances in recent years with the approval of new TB medicines much more needs to be done.  By bringing together some of India's brightest minds with our scientists, we increase the potential to achieve major research breakthroughs that can lead to innovative new treatments for the millions of people in India and around the world who suffer from TB.

The new research program will capitalize on CSIR-IMTECH's world-class expertise in microbial technology and research and the proven research and development capabilities of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies to strengthen the collective potential of our research efforts.

Dr. Anil Koul, Director, CSIR-IMTECH said that TB remains a significant challenge in India, killing approximately half a million-people in 2015 alone. The partnership we have announced today with Johnson & Johnson has the potential to accelerate our work in support of India's National Strategic Plan, our accelerated action plan to End TB by 2025, and most importantly save lives.

Today's announcement builds on nearly 20 years of TB research and development by Johnson & Johnson, which led to the approval of bedaquiline, the first new TB medicine in nearly 50 years, and adds to existing partnerships at central and state levels in India to increase awareness, diagnosis and care, and broaden access to bedaquiline.

Chandigarh 18th August:-Being an architect is touch, says one of the leading architects, Sangeet Sharma, who delves into the journey of a professional practice through his novel, 'Castles in the Air: Misadventures of a Profession".

An architect, author, poet, architectural critic, artist, motivational speaker, thinker, and a musician, Sangeet Sharma, opens the novel with a prologue to the book with the words, "Architecture is one hell of a profession."

Sangeet Sharma said that though it is fiction, it smacks of ground reality of being architecture.

The frustration of dealing with clients and their general distrust with the architects, unprofessional contractors and suppliers, and above all the lackadaisical attitude of the education system, which gets reflected through the protagonist who goes through the pain of the profession.

He explained that he has followed the writing style of A&D i.e. Appear and Disappear, where different characters in different milieu of this professional journey act their part in that particular segment or chapter and leave.

Many may not agree with my depiction of the professional pangs, but reality of practice prevails, and at times a creative professional finds stifled, about which Sangeet writes in the epilogue, with a concluding remarks, as the ultimate satisfying thoughts, "We are immortalized along with our buildings".

The book delights as one comes across the nitty-gritty of being an architect.

Sangeet is a visiting faculty to various architecture colleges, and professional fora, and has five other books to his credit, including Architectural Aesthetics, Publisher-Abhishek Publications;  Step by Step Hospital Designing and Planning, Publisher: JAYPEE publications; Architecture Life & Me, Publisher: Rupa & Co.; Corb's Capitol, Publisher: A3 Foundation/White Falcon; Archi Talks, Publisher: A3 Foundation; One book on English poetry "The Touch of Moon"
