Every Year 40,000 to 50,000 Patients are Diagnosed with Brain Tumour in India: Dr Anil Dhingra

Chandigarh 07th June:-To create awareness on 'World Brain Tumor Day' surgical neurology experts from Paras Hospitals Panchkula addressed the media today. Present on the occasion were Dr. Anil Dhingra Associate Director Neuro & Spine Surgery, Dr Ajay Bisht Consultant Neuro Surgery and Dr Sonia kapil, Associate consultant Neuro Anesthesia from Paras Super Specialty Hospital Panchkula.

Addressing the media, Dr. Anil Dhingra said that June 8th is celebrated as world Brain tumor day. This day was initiated by German Brain tumor Association in the year 2000 with the aim to spread awareness about this lethal disease. Several researches have been going on for the treatment of Brain tumors. Brain tumors are devastating lesions that affect the nerve centre of the body. All our functions, from eating to speaking to walking etc, and all our emotions, from love to hate, are controlled by the brain, the spinal cord and nerves that are intimately connected. The brain is housed in a rigid shell (skull) and body maintains a rather homogenous atmosphere, air conditioned & shock proof, inside the skull. Abnormal growth of tissues inside the skull leads to the formation of a "tumor" which causes local destruction and pressure on surrounding normal tissues. Unlike the widespread defeatist perception about brain tumor, many patients of the disease can be cured with current advances in technology and early detection, doctors said on the World Brain Tumor Day.

Explaining further he said that these tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-malignant). Malignant brain tumors, mostly, arise from brain matter (intrinsic) and can only be controlled for variable periods of time–after using all the various modalities of treatment available (surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy). But they differ from cancers of rest of body in that they do not metastasize (i.e. spread to other parts of body). Benign tumors, on the other hand, originate mostly from structures around the brain (extrinsic). They can be successfully removed surgically and, once removed totally, they mostly do not recur. Some of them can be effectively treated by using stereo tactically directed radiotherapy especially when diagnosed early when the tumor size is small.

Adding further Dr. Ajay Bisht said that Brain tumors account for about 2 % of all cancers. Around 500 new cases of brain tumors are diagnosed every day worldwide and most of them are not inheritable. Brain tumors can occur at all ages – from infant to ripe old age. As of now no definite cause has been found for their origin. Therefore, there are no such specific preventive measures that can be taken.

Some common symptoms that people experience are headaches (typically worst in early mornings), vomiting, seizures, weakness of one or the other part of the body, difficulty in seeing or hearing or understanding.

The treatment of brain tumors consists of removal of the tumor (for reducing pressure on normal structures as early as possible, and to obtain definite biopsy of the lesion for characterization and prognostication), followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy for malignant lesions only. Safe execution of surgery demands that the surgeon has as much specific knowledge as possible before operation. MRI, with special sequences which permit visualization of functional areas (fMRI) & fibre tracts (TDI images) is extremely useful for obtaining this information. This permits the surgeon to chart a safe course to the tumor.

Dr. Anil Dhingra also shared that the incidence and prevalence of brain tumor is growing rapidly in India.Every year 40,000 to 50,000 people are diagnosed with brain tumour which reduces life expectancy by 20 years. These statistics are shocking. Brain tumors can be, and are often, operated upon while awake so that they can assist the surgeon by moving a part of the body or speaking during surgery. Advanced technologies have made it possible for the neuro experts to venture in areas which were, for long, considered to be inapproachable or have unacceptable levels of risk of injury. For safe conduct of these surgeries and the intensive post op care, which is half the care, it is desirable to have a dedicated Neuro ICU with trained manpower and appropriate equipment. This improves the results dramatically.

Six Mega Trends Driving Nutritional and Dietary Changes in Asia: EIU Report

By 121 News

Chandigarh 07th June:-Cargill along with Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released a report titled 'Food for Thought', as part of a five-part research series. This report highlights two sides of Asia's nutritional arc through examining dietary changes across the region and summarizing it in six megatrends - Quality not Quantity, Urbanisation and Income, Obesity & Micro Nutrients, Diverging Outcomes, Low Nutrional Awareness and Advertising and Social Media, that are driving these trends.

Quality not Quantity:  The need to switch from 'more' food to 'better' food will be the tenet for the coming years. Increase in the per capita income and calorie intake graph shows a significant growth in the quantity of food consumed, with most countries consuming more than 2,500 calories per capita daily. As a result, growth in calorie intake is moderating, composition of diets is changing quickly with a growing consumption of protein, especially meat and fish. Asia's packaged food sector has experienced 4% growth in 2017,highlighting the increase in consumption of processed food as it is more convenient for the consumers and does not bereave nutritional requirement.

Urbanization and income rise lead to a significant nutritional shift: The rapid increase in people moving to urban areas with Delhi and Mumbai pegged to be in the top populated cities by 2030 with population of 36.1 million and 27.8 million respectively. This along with rise in income amongst consumers has resulted in growing consumer spending, especially on food.  economies, driving fast food outlets and supermarkets to build chains. It is also believed to encourage less active lifestyles and greater consumption of convenience food. scale change creating sufficient nutritive fuel the to together work Urbanisation and income growth

Obesity and Micronutrients - Increase in energy density and lower quality of diets: Urbanisation has a direct correlation with obesity. Diets deteriorate during migration to cities, thereby, confirming that nutritional changes occur as people move to urban areas. People in less-developed countries with lower Gross National Income (GNI) per capita are more vulnerable to the negative health consequences of urbanisation. This puts India in a tough spot as despite being the 6th largest economy, it still has a lower GNI per capita as compared to other countries in Asia. However, India has the 4th least obese people in Asia taking BMI as the index for the study with obesity affecting women more than men. Whilst the calorie intake is increasing, the quality of the diet is not. This leads to micronutrient deficiency or "hidden hunger" – people are both overweight or appear healthy but are missing vital nutrients, creating one of the more worrying trends in the region.

Diverging Nutritional Outcomes - Unequal nutritional outcomes stems from Asia's growing inequality:  growth across the region, significant GDP Despite key concern in Asia, even as obesity grows a still is undernutrition. India is the most egregious example of a fast-growing economy with highly unequal nutritional outcome. Structural gender inequality also shapes divergent nutritional outcomes – Female children are more malnourished than male children here. In this context, Cargill's oils business in India has a corporate responsibility program – Gemini Badhte Kadam, which works with school children to raise nutrional awareness amongst the girl child and works towards bringing nutrional equality between genders. Lower levels of education and literacy among mothers also affect nutritional outcomes. The nutrition–inequality nexus does not only express itself in under nutrition. Poor are also vulnerable to over-nutrition, with overweight and obesity increasing among segments of the urban-dwelling poor.

Low Nutritional Awareness – Awareness about both under nutrition and over-nutrition, varies greatly by country and income level and is especially low in the region. There is a need for greater consumer education across the board. Awareness is especially important among mothers as mothers are the first source of nutrition for a child for "first thousand days" of life. Adults also need to be better educated about the dangers of obesogenic foods and importance of physical exercise.

Social Media & Advertising shaping food trends: The intensity of food advertising in Asia is growing however regulators are increasingly stepping in. Governments including Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea have stepped in to restrict and restrain some types of advertising. By country, Singapore and the Philippines have seen the largest increases in GDA labelling adoption since 2012, with Malaysia and Thailand in the top four for total adoption rates.

Social media will undoubtedly become a key form of communication between consumers and stakeholders in the food industry. Beyond driving trends, it is also likely to become a key channel for advertising and consumer engagement. Growing social media prominence will provide opportunities for companies in the food industry, but it is also likely to spur efforts to closely monitor and regulate this space.

However, there are opportunities for stakeholders to address the above trends. Food fortification and reformulation will remain powerful tools for tackling under nutrition as the former is an efficient and cost-effective way to reduce obesogenic ingredients. More focus is needed on affordable and quality food in urban environments. Good nutrition needs to be driven by enabling food systems and single-target policies will not be sufficient. Policies on health and nutrition will vary from prescription to advocacy and concerted action has more impact than relying on the trickle-down effects of economic growth. Clearly there are no simple solutions, hence the need for policies and programs to help tackle this effectively. In conclusion, efforts that promote the most fundamental aspects of human health, nutrition and hygiene, should undoubtedly be a priority.

Commenting on the EIU report Mr. Piyush Patnaik, Managing Director, Cargill's oils business in India said that with growing income and urbanisation, nutrional inequalities are also on the rise. In order to tackle this effectively, companies, governments, NGOs and other world organizations should look at working with each other – the goal being to make health a key priority. Being pioneers in the initiative of fortification and working in line with the organisational goal of nourishing the world, it is our responsibility to work towards supporting the food industry and ensuring good health for everyone, across the region.

And when a friend introduced him to the world of Online Portal market in around 2007, little did Vikramjit know that his world is going to change forever.

Vikramjit started his research and analysis to understand the world of eBay and online market. Challenges were many. Poor Connectivity issues, Costly internet connections, exploring unknown global technologies without much support. But that did not deter his entrepreneurial spirit. His first product on display was an Aquarium Fish feed and it became an instantaneous success. This success paved the way to Vikramjit exploring the potential of online market and the journey of CHESS BAZAAR.com

Established in year 2007, the journey of Chess Bazaar began by chance from Amritsar flea market, where Vikramjit's exploring mind was scouting for creative tourist souvenirs and collective items and his eyes fell on a Royal Set. The designs and creativity of the Chess boards and the Chess sets intrigued Vikramjit so much that he invested the meager Rs. 2000 he had to buy some 2-3 handmade sets.  He had to borrow a proper photography camera to upload the photographs on an online portal and then there was no looking back.

Today after almost 13 years, Chess Bazaar has become a global fad with customers all over USA, Europe, Philippines, Singapore and different parts of the world.  Chess Bazaar recently clocked a turnover of Rs. 5 Crores led by the vision of Vikramjit Singh, Founder and Managing Director of ArtSmart (Chess Bazaar's Parent Company).

Like many other successful global brands, Vikramjit's dreams also took shape in his Garage and from there he started tapping the keys of his Old Outdated Computer to reach out to global markets. However his knowledge in IT background to help communicate in crisp and faster fashion on online portals , his negotiation skills from real estate business to help in dealing with Punjabi laborers in Amritsar, his customer service orientation skills to help understand the requirements of his exquisite customers and his MA degree in English language, all started to come together like a zigsaw puzzle. Like the 32 warriors on the CHESS BOARD, all of Vikramjit's skills, passion, and vision joined hands and finally the Dream had began to take shape. It was on 18th December, 2007 that the first sale of CHESS BAZAAR.com happened and since then Chess Bazaar has not looked back.

Challenges were many but it's only through continuous hit and trial methods, does one master the art of online business.  After identifying global markets, suddenly packing and Shipping these delicate pieces across the globe became an Achilles' heel. There were no professional services like DHL or FedEx in those times and even the Tax structures of global business were not clear but entering Online business always meant business commitments with newer continents and unexplored territories Pieces had to be shipped meticulously ensuring minimum damage and refund complaints but Chess Bazaar was always innovating, thinking of indigenous ways and was up for the challenge.

By 2008, as the "Game" became more challenging yet satisfying, Vikramjit Singh started winding up all other business and started forming a team of friends, experts and vendors to give more focus on the business. Vikramjit's better half too joined in as a strong support and it was her motivation and encouragement that helped Vikramjit to enhance his vision.

Today Chess bazaar is a pioneer in reviving old and ancient designs and deals with rare/ fragile/ expensive and royal designs. Huge amount of research and analysis is being dome to explore collector's choice and luxurious pieces. Chess Bazaar wishes to provide the rarest and most luxurious Chess Sets, Chess boards and Chess accessories for every home.

Vikramjit Singh shared that in last 3-4 years, we are growing at almost 50% CAGR and as the online craze has now begun, we are exploring newer markets continuously for our more than 3000 products and designs. Most of our markets are currently from USA and Europe but now we are eyeing Indian market as well. After all, India is the country where the game of Chess was invented, and he feels that Luxurious Chess Sets should be a part of every Indian home.

He further added that we are continuously exploring newer exotic stuff. From Brazilian Wood to African Wood, we are trying to find the best combination of raw material which can offer the most royal and elegant looks to our Chess Pieces but at better affordable prices too. Most of our pieces are beautifully hand crafted too and we are not using any dyes to mass manufacture Chess sets or boards. From the dusty lanes of Amritsar we have started exploring new avenues in Rajasthan, Kolkata, Mysore and understand lost forms of cultures and dynasties. Chess was a game of the royals and our each piece is a collector's item in itself. A Chess board becomes an intriguing passion as you explore more and more.

Vikramjit Singh said that still awareness about CHESS BAZAAR amongst the affluent Indian families is low and we are now conceptualizing some premium strategies in terms of Online offerings and Offline stores to ensure that our luxurious collector's items reach out to Art Lovers, Sports Lovers, Interior decorators and to every Niche, Premium and Classy Indian homes.
